How to hang pictures: the right height for a calm room

Left: three pictures as a calm group just above the headboard of a bed – correct. Right: the same three pictures scattered and hung too high above the bed – wrong.

In short

The center of a picture belongs at eye level, on average 150 centimeters above the floor. Above a sofa or bed, leave 15 to 25 centimeters up to the bottom of the frame; at the dining table, hang the center at seated eye level, around 120 centimeters. The picture should be about two thirds to three quarters as wide as the furniture below it.

Pictures bring a home to life. They tell your story and give every room a personal touch. Yet a subtle restlessness often remains in a room, even though the furnishings are harmonious and the interior design actually fits perfectly. Why do rooms often feel restless despite expensive furniture? Usually it comes down to a very simple detail: the pictures are hanging at the wrong height.

Every unnecessary drill hole costs nerves and often leaves you with a nagging feeling: is that picture really in the right place? That ends now – a few simple guidelines give you instant relief and balance.

How high should you hang pictures? The center at eye level

The center of a picture always belongs at eye level. On average, that's 150 centimeters from the floor. For interior designers, this measurement is the absolute foundation for a calm room.

Whether you're planning a whole room or want to fit old furniture into a modern apartment: test the measurements first with painter's tape or a piece of cardboard. That way you can see the result before you reach for the drill.

The right distances: sofa, bed and dining table

Things change as soon as furniture comes into play. Go by these values:

  • Above the sofa: Give the picture a little room to breathe. Above the sofa, it's best to leave 15 to 25 centimeters of space up to the bottom of the frame.
  • Above the bed: The same applies here: 15 to 25 centimeters between the headboard and the bottom of the frame.
  • At the dining table: When we eat, we sit – obviously. The center of the picture therefore belongs at seated eye level, around 120 centimeters above the floor. If you're planning your floor plan, it's best to think of this cozy viewing angle right away.

Effect through arrangement and proportion

Arrange pictures in a row horizontally for more visual width, vertically for more height. Want to bring complete harmony to your home? Bottom edges in one line bring calm; top edges in one line create a sense of movement. To show your pictures in their best light, use pools of light – more in How to light a living room.

One last but incredibly important tip for perfect proportions: the picture should be about two thirds to three quarters as wide as the furniture below it. That way nothing on the wall looks lost or overwhelming.
