Advice on furnishing and space planning

How to hang pictures: the right height for a calm room

The center of a picture belongs at eye level, on average 150 centimeters above the floor. Above a sofa or bed, leave 15 to 25 centimeters up to the bottom of the frame; at the dining table, hang the center at seated eye level, around 120 centimeters. The picture should be about two thirds to three quarters as wide as the furniture below it.

How to light a living room: four rules for cozy light

A room feels cozy when its light comes from at least three sources at different heights rather than from a single ceiling light. Create pools of light instead of lighting everything evenly, choose warm white light of around 2700 K for living and sleeping areas, and make it dimmable.

Don't be afraid of dark walls: how colors work in a room

Dark wall colors don't make a room small as long as the ceiling stays lighter than the walls. Dark shades belong on the wall opposite the window, where daylight hits them, not on the window wall itself. If a whole wall feels like too much, use stripes: horizontal for more width, vertical for more height.
